Cookie policy and browser management guide

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website places on a visitor's device when the visitor accesses the site. These files are stored by the visitor's browser and allow the site to recognise the device on subsequent visits. Cookies do not execute programs or transmit viruses, and they cannot access other files stored on the device.

Cookies serve a range of functions depending on their type. Some are necessary for the site to operate correctly, while others collect information about how visitors interact with the site or remember preferences set during a previous visit. The sections below describe the categories of cookies used on this site and the purpose each category serves.

Types of cookies used

Essential cookies

Essential cookies are required for the basic operation of the site. They enable core functions such as page navigation, secure form submission, and session management. Without these cookies, certain parts of the site cannot function as intended. Essential cookies do not collect personally identifiable information and are not used for any marketing or tracking purpose.

Functional cookies

Functional cookies allow the site to remember choices made by the visitor, such as preferred display settings or previously selected options in forms. These cookies improve the visitor's experience by reducing the need to re-enter information on return visits. They do not track browsing activity across other websites and are not shared with third parties for advertising purposes.

Analytics cookies

Analytics cookies collect aggregated, anonymised data about how visitors interact with the site, including which pages are visited, how long is spent on each page, and how visitors navigate between sections. This information is used to understand site usage patterns and to identify areas where the site's content or structure may be improved. Individual visitors are not identified through analytics cookies.

Marketing cookies

Marketing cookies may be used to present content relevant to the visitor's interests, based on browsing behaviour observed across this and other sites. Where third-party marketing cookies are active, they are governed by the privacy policies of the respective third parties. The site does not sell visitor data to third parties for their independent marketing purposes.

How cookies benefit visitors

Cookies that retain session state and form inputs reduce the effort required to navigate the site, particularly for visitors who return to the same sections across multiple visits. Functional cookies ensure that settings adjusted during one session remain in place when the visitor returns, without requiring those adjustments to be repeated each time.

Analytics cookies allow the site to make evidence-based decisions about which content and navigation structures are most useful to visitors. Improvements made as a result of analytics data benefit all subsequent visitors. The site does not use analytics data to build individual visitor profiles or to make automated decisions about individual users.

Managing cookies in your browser

Visitors may control, restrict, or delete cookies at any time through their browser settings. Each major browser provides its own interface for managing cookie preferences. The steps for the most commonly used browsers are outlined below. Disabling certain categories of cookies may affect the availability or behaviour of some site features.

Chrome: In Google Chrome, select the three-dot menu at the top right, then choose Settings. Navigate to Privacy and security, then Cookies and other site data. From this panel, visitors can block all cookies, block third-party cookies only, or clear cookies that have already been stored on the device.
Firefox: In Mozilla Firefox, select the hamburger menu at the top right, then choose Settings. Navigate to Privacy and Security. Under the Enhanced Tracking Protection section and the Cookies and Site Data section, visitors can manage cookie permissions and clear stored cookies for all sites or for specific sites individually.
Safari: In Apple Safari on macOS, select Safari from the menu bar, then Preferences, then Privacy. Visitors can choose to block all cookies or manage website-specific cookie data. On iOS devices, navigate to Settings, then Safari, then Privacy and Security to adjust cookie preferences for the mobile browser.
Edge: In Microsoft Edge, select the three-dot menu at the top right, then choose Settings. Navigate to Cookies and site permissions, then Cookies and site data. Visitors can block third-party cookies, clear all stored cookies, or set exceptions for specific sites from within this panel.

Blocking all cookies may prevent some site features from functioning correctly, including form submission and session continuity. Visitors who wish to retain full site functionality are advised to allow essential cookies while restricting or blocking other categories according to their preferences. Browser settings apply to all websites visited, not only this site.

How long cookies are kept

Session cookies are temporary and are deleted automatically when the visitor closes their browser. They are used to maintain continuity during a single visit and do not persist beyond the end of the session. Most essential cookies used on this site operate as session cookies unless the visitor's browser is configured to retain session data.

Persistent cookies remain on the visitor's device for a defined period after the session ends, or until the visitor deletes them manually. The retention period varies by cookie type and purpose. Analytics cookies typically persist for a period of up to thirteen months. Functional cookies may persist for a shorter period depending on the preference they are designed to retain. Visitors can review and delete persistent cookies at any time through their browser settings.
